This holiday season, this unusual collection* of songs gave me such joy. Amid the standard seasonal pop music party, it stands out and give me chills, every time I hear it.
This handful of exquisitely synthesized tunes is moody, somber, modern and ancient simultaneously, and speaks directly to my soul. I don’t know if the artists behind it are cut from the same melancholy cloth as me, but they have tapped a deep source of cool, deep, and ultimately hopeful.
Life looks so obviously tragic on its face to me. Incalculable sound and fury signifying nothing. Which is absolutely true; all of life is underscored by a current of deep grief, and there’s nothing I can do about it. Truth.
It’s deceptively easy to believe this is the only truth. It’s not.
A silent harmony-truth runs alongside, only requiring our attention to be heard. A tiny shimmering parallel truth that we are always so close – so close! to joy, too.
In the spaces between, we can find joy. It’s right here, right now. In the space between words, between thoughts, in the moment in space where an ocean wave rests … between in and out.
Somehow, that’s what this particular music illuminates for me. The beauty and the mystery of joy and grief, working in harmony.
Happy new year to all.
